The Openingالفَاتِحَة

Revealed in Makkah, Al-Fatiha is recited in every unit of every prayer, making it the most recited text in the world. Known as 'Umm al-Kitab' (Mother of the Book), it summarizes the Quran's entire message: praising Allah, acknowledging His lordship, and asking for guidance to the straight path.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Bi-smi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Ar-raḥmāni r-raḥīm
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
مَـٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Māliki yawmi d-dīn
Master of the Day of Judgment
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
ʾIyyāka naʿbudu wa-ʾiyyāka nastaʿīn
You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help
ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ
Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm
Guide us to the straight path
صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
Ṣirāṭa lladhīna ʾanʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa-lā ḍ-ḍāllīn
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned anger, nor of those who are astray

The Sincerity / Purity of Faithالإخلاص

Revealed in Makkah when the polytheists asked the Prophet to describe Allah's lineage. It declares the absolute oneness of Allah in just four verses. The Prophet said reciting it equals one-third of the Quran in reward. Its core message — Allah is One, Self-Sufficient, without offspring or equal — is the cornerstone of Islamic theology.

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ
Qul huwa llāhu ʾaḥad
Say: He is Allah, the One
ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ
Allāhu ṣ-ṣamad
Allah, the Eternal, Absolute
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
Lam yalid wa-lam yūlad
He begets not, nor is He begotten
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ
Wa-lam yakun lahu kufuwan ʾaḥad
And there is none comparable to Him

The Daybreakالفَلَق

One of the two 'Refuge surahs' (Al-Mu'awwidhatain), revealed in Madinah. The Prophet recited it along with An-Nas every morning, evening, and before sleep. It teaches seeking Allah's protection from all external evil: created beings, darkness, witchcraft, and envy.

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ
Qul ʾaʿūdhu bi-rabbi l-falaq
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak
مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
Min sharri mā khalaq
From the evil of what He has created
وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
Wa-min sharri ghāsiqin ʾidhā waqab
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّـٰثَـٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ
Wa-min sharri n-naffāthāti fī l-ʿuqad
And from the evil of those who blow on knots
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ
Wa-min sharri ḥāsidin ʾidhā ḥasad
And from the evil of an envier when he envies

Mankindالنَّاس

The final surah of the Quran, revealed alongside Al-Falaq. It focuses on internal evil — the whispers of Shaytan that enter the human heart. By seeking refuge in Allah as Lord, King, and God of mankind, believers guard their hearts from the most subtle dangers.

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ
Qul ʾaʿūdhu bi-rabbi n-nās
Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind
مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Maliki n-nās
The King of mankind
إِلَـٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ
ʾIlāhi n-nās
The God of mankind
مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ
Min sharri l-waswāsi l-khannās
From the evil of the retreating whisperer
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūri n-nās
Who whispers in the hearts of mankind
مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ
Mina l-jinnati wa-n-nās
From among the jinn and mankind

The Time / The Declining Dayالعَصر

Imam Al-Shafi'i said if people only reflected on this surah, it would suffice as guidance for humanity. Revealed in Makkah, it warns that all humanity is in a state of loss except those with four qualities: faith, righteous action, mutual exhortation to truth, and patience.

وَٱلْعَصْرِ
Wa l-ʿaṣr
By the declining day
إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ
ʾInna l-ʾinsāna lafī khusr
Indeed, mankind is in loss
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ
ʾIllā lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa-tawāṣaw bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-tawāṣaw bi-ṣ-ṣabr
Except those who believe, do righteous deeds, and advise each other to truth and to patience

The Abundanceالكَوثَر

The shortest surah in the Quran, revealed in Makkah when enemies mocked the Prophet after his son's death, calling him 'cut off' with no heirs. Allah promises abundant goodness — Al-Kawthar, a river in Paradise. The true meaning: continuity comes from Allah's favour, not worldly lineage.

إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ
ʾInnā ʾaʿṭaynāka l-kawthar
Indeed, We have granted you an abundance
فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ
Fa-ṣalli li-rabbika wa-nḥar
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice
إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ
ʾInna shāniʾaka huwa l-ʾabtar
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off

The Elephantالفِيل

Revealed in Makkah, this surah commemorates the Year of the Elephant (570 CE), the same year the Prophet Muhammad was born. Abraha, the Abyssinian viceroy of Yemen, led an army with elephants to destroy the Kaaba. Allah sent flocks of birds (Ababil) that pelted the army with clay stones, destroying it completely. This miraculous protection demonstrated Allah's absolute power.

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ
ʾA-lam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka bi-ʾaṣḥābi l-fīl
Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant?
أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ
ʾA-lam yajʿal kaydahum fī taḍlīl
Did He not make their plan into misguidance?
وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ
Wa-ʾarsala ʿalayhim ṭayran ʾabābīl
And He sent against them birds in flocks
تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
Tarmīhim bi-ḥijāratin min sijjīl
Striking them with stones of hard clay
فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ
Fa-jaʿalahum kaʿaṣfin maʾkūl
And He made them like eaten straw

Qurayshقُرَيْش

Revealed in Makkah, closely linked with Al-Fil. It reminds the Quraysh of the blessings Allah gave them: safe trading routes to Yemen in winter and Syria in summer, and the blessing of food and security because of their guardianship of the Kaaba. This gratitude should motivate them to worship Allah alone.

لِإِيلَافِ قُرَيْشٍ
Li-ʾīlāfi Quraysh
For the accustomed security of Quraysh
إِيلَافِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ الشِّتَاءِ وَالصَّيْفِ
ʾĪlāfihim riḥlata sh-shitāʾi wa-ṣ-ṣayf
Their accustomed security in the journeys of winter and summer
فَلْيَعْبُدُوا رَبَّ هَٰذَا الْبَيْتِ
Fa-l-yaʿbudū rabba hādhā l-bayt
Let them worship the Lord of this House
الَّذِي أَطْعَمَهُم مِّن جُوعٍ وَآمَنَهُم مِّنْ خَوْفٍ
Alladhī ʾaṭʿamahum min jūʿin wa-ʾāmanahum min khawf
Who fed them against hunger and made them safe against fear

The Small Kindnessesالمَاعُون

Revealed in Makkah, this surah gives a striking definition of who truly denies the religion: not just disbelievers, but those who pray yet are heedless, show off their deeds, and refuse even small kindnesses. It links true faith directly to social responsibility. Ritual worship without compassion is hypocrisy.

أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ
ʾA-raʾayta lladhī yukadhdhibu bi-d-dīn
Have you seen the one who denies the Recompense?
فَذَٰلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ
Fa-dhālika lladhī yadaʿʿu l-yatīm
That is the one who drives away the orphan
وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Wa-lā yaḥuḍḍu ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-miskīn
And does not encourage the feeding of the poor
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّينَ
Fa-waylun li-l-muṣallīn
Woe to those who pray [yet are heedless]
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَن صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
Alladhīna hum ʿan ṣalātihim sāhūn
Who are heedless of their prayers
الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ
Alladhīna hum yurāʾūn
Those who make a show of their deeds
وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ
Wa-yamnaʿūna l-māʿūn
And withhold small kindnesses

The Palm Fibreالمَسَد

Revealed in Makkah, this surah uniquely names a specific person — Abu Lahab — who cursed the Prophet publicly. It predicts his doom in the Hellfire. His wife carried thorns to harm the Prophet. Both died in disbelief, fulfilling the prophecy during the Prophet's lifetime. This proves the Quran's divine authorship.

تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ
Tabbat yadā ʾabī lahabin wa-tabb
May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, and perish he
مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ
Mā ʾaghnā ʿanhu māluhu wa-mā kasab
His wealth will not avail him, nor what he earned
سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ
Sa-yaṣlā nāran dhāta lahab
He will be burned in a Fire of Blazing Flame
وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ
Wa-mraʾatuhu ḥammālata l-ḥaṭab
And his wife — the carrier of firewood
فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍ
Fī jīdihā ḥablun min masad
Around her neck is a rope of palm fiber

The Divine Supportالنَّصْر

Revealed in Madinah, considered one of the last surahs revealed. When Umar ibn al-Khattab heard this surah, he understood it as announcing the Prophet's imminent death — the Prophet passed away approximately 80 days after its revelation. In victory, the command is to praise Allah and seek forgiveness, not to celebrate oneself.

إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ
ʾIdhā jāʾa naṣru llāhi wa-l-fatḥ
When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest
وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا
Wa-raʾayta n-nāsa yadkhulūna fī dīni llāhi ʾafwājā
And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
Fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika wa-staghfirh, ʾinnahu kāna tawwābā
Then exalt with the praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever accepting of repentance.

The Earthquakeالزَّلْزَلَة

Revealed in Madinah, this surah vividly depicts the Day of Judgment. The earth itself will testify to all that happened upon it. The Prophet said this surah equals half the Quran in weight. Its most famous statement — 'Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it' — is one of the most profound statements on divine justice.

إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا
ʾIdhā zulzilati l-ʾarḍu zilzālahā
When the earth is shaken with its final earthquake
وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا
Wa-ʾakhrajati l-ʾarḍu ʾathqālahā
And the earth discharges its burdens
وَقَالَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا لَهَا
Wa-qāla l-ʾinsānu mā lahā
And man says: What is wrong with it?
يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ أَخْبَارَهَا
Yawmaʾidhin tuḥaddithu ʾakhbārahā
That Day, it will report its news
بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا
Bi-ʾanna rabbaka ʾawḥā lahā
Because your Lord has commanded it
يَوْمَئِذٍ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ أَشْتَاتًا لِّيُرَوْا أَعْمَالَهُمْ
Yawmaʾidhin yaṣduru n-nāsu ʾashtātan li-yuraw ʾaʿmālahum
That Day, people will depart separated to be shown their deeds
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ
Fa-man yaʿmal mithqāla dharratin khayran yarah
So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ
Wa-man yaʿmal mithqāla dharratin sharran yarah
And whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it

The Chargersالعَادِيَات

Revealed in Makkah, this surah opens with oaths by warhorses — their panting breath, sparking hooves, and dust clouds — then pivots sharply to condemn human ingratitude toward Allah. The contrast is powerful: animals are loyal in their purpose while humans are ungrateful for Allah's countless blessings. The surah warns of the Day when graves are turned inside out and all secrets of the heart are exposed.

وَالْعَادِيَاتِ ضَبْحًا
Wa-l-ʿādiyāti ḍabḥā
By the racers, panting
فَالْمُورِيَاتِ قَدْحًا
Fa-l-mūriyāti qadḥā
And the producers of sparks when striking
فَالْمُغِيرَاتِ صُبْحًا
Fa-l-mughīrāti ṣubḥā
And the chargers at dawn
فَأَثَرْنَ بِهِ نَقْعًا
Fa-ʾatharna bihi naqʿā
Raising thereby clouds of dust
فَوَسَطْنَ بِهِ جَمْعًا
Fa-wasaṭna bihi jamʿā
Arriving thereby in the center collectively
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لِرَبِّهِ لَكَنُودٌ
ʾInna l-ʾinsāna li-rabbihi la-kanūd
Indeed, mankind is ungrateful to his Lord
وَإِنَّهُ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٌ
Wa-ʾinnahu ʿalā dhālika la-shahīd
And indeed, he is to that a witness
وَإِنَّهُ لِحُبِّ الْخَيْرِ لَشَدِيدٌ
Wa-ʾinnahu li-ḥubbi l-khayri la-shadīd
And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense
أَفَلَا يَعْلَمُ إِذَا بُعْثِرَ مَا فِي الْقُبُورِ
ʾA-fa-lā yaʿlamu ʾidhā buʿthira mā fī l-qubūr
Does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered
وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي الصُّدُورِ
Wa-ḥuṣṣila mā fī ṣ-ṣudūr
And that within the breasts is obtained — exposed
إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِيرٌ
ʾInna rabbahum bihim yawmaʾidhin la-khabīr
Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is fully Acquainted

The Calamityالقَارِعَة

Revealed in Makkah, Al-Qari'ah describes Judgment Day: people scattered like moths, mountains like fluffed wool, and scales weighing every deed with perfect precision. The outcome is binary — heavy scales mean a pleasant life in Paradise; light scales lead to the abyss of fire. Like Az-Zalzalah, it emphasises absolute accountability.

الْقَارِعَةُ
Al-qāriʿah
The Striking Calamity
مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
Mā l-qāriʿah
What is the Striking Calamity?
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْقَارِعَةُ
Wa-mā ʾadrāka mā l-qāriʿah
And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
يَوْمَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ كَالْفَرَاشِ الْمَبْثُوثِ
Yawma yakūnu n-nāsu ka-l-farāshi l-mabthūth
It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed
وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ الْمَنفُوشِ
Wa-takūnu l-jibālu ka-l-ʿihni l-manfūsh
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
Fa-ʾammā man thaqulat mawāzīnuh
As for one whose scales are heavy with good deeds
فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
Fa-huwa fī ʿīshatin rāḍiyah
He will be in a pleasant life
وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَفَّتْ مَوَازِينُهُ
Wa-ʾammā man khaffat mawāzīnuh
But as for one whose scales are light
فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ
Fa-ʾummuhu hāwiyah
His refuge will be an abyss
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا هِيَهْ
Wa-mā ʾadrāka mā hiyah
And what can make you know what that is?
نَارٌ حَامِيَةٌ
Nārun ḥāmiyah
It is a Fire, intensely hot

The Rivalry in World Increaseالتَّكَاثُر

Revealed in Makkah, this surah warns against a subtle but devastating trap: endless competition for more wealth, status, and possessions that distracts people until death — even boasting of ancestors' graves. The powerful warning: on the Day of Judgment, people will be asked about every pleasure they enjoyed in this world.

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ
ʾAlhākumu t-takāthur
Competition in worldly increase diverts you
حَتَّىٰ زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ
Ḥattā zurtumu l-maqābir
Until you visit the graveyards
كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
Kallā sawfa taʿlamūn
No! You are going to know
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ
Thumma kallā sawfa taʿlamūn
Then, no! You are going to know
كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ
Kallā law taʿlamūna ʿilma l-yaqīn
No! If you only knew with knowledge of certainty
لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ
La-tarawunna l-jaḥīm
You will surely see the Hellfire
ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ
Thumma la-tarawunnahā ʿayna l-yaqīn
Then you will surely see it with the eye of certainty
ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ
Thumma la-tusʾalunna yawmaʾidhin ʿani n-naʿīm
Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure

The Traducerالهُمَزَة

Revealed in Makkah, this surah condemns the backbiter and slanderer who mocks others and hoards wealth, thinking it grants immortality. The punishment — the Crusher (Hutamah), a fire that reaches the heart — is uniquely fitting: hearts full of malice will be reached by justice's fire. Wealth provides no protection against Allah.

وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Waylun li-kulli humazatin lumazah
Woe to every scorner and mocker
الَّذِي جَمَعَ مَالًا وَعَدَّدَهُ
Alladhī jamaʿa mālan wa-ʿaddadah
Who collects wealth and counts it
يَحْسَبُ أَنَّ مَالَهُ أَخْلَدَهُ
Yaḥsabu ʾanna mālahu ʾakhladah
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal
كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنبَذَنَّ فِي الْحُطَمَةِ
Kallā la-yunbadhanna fī l-ḥuṭamah
No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ
Wa-mā ʾadrāka mā l-ḥuṭamah
And what can make you know what is the Crusher?
نَارُ اللَّهِ الْمُوقَدَةُ
Nāru llāhi l-mūqadah
It is the fire of Allah, eternally fueled
الَّتِي تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْأَفْئِدَةِ
Allatī taṭṭaliʿu ʿalā l-ʾafʾidah
Which mounts directed at the hearts
إِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِم مُّؤْصَدَةٌ
ʾInnahā ʿalayhim muʾṣadah
Indeed, it will be closed down upon them
فِي عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ
Fī ʿamadin mumaddadah

The Morning Hoursالضُّحَى

Revealed in Makkah during a pause in revelation that distressed the Prophet. Allah tenderly reassures him: the pause was not abandonment. Allah reminds the Prophet of His care throughout his life — sheltering him as an orphan, guiding him when confused, enriching him when poor. Even in our darkest moments, Allah has not forgotten us.

وَالضُّحَىٰ
Wa-ḍ-ḍuḥā
By the morning brightness
وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ
Wa-l-layli ʾidhā sajā
And by the night when it covers with darkness
مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ
Mā waddaʿaka rabbuka wa-mā qalā
Your Lord has not taken leave of you, nor has He detested you
وَلَلْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ لَّكَ مِنَ الْأُولَىٰ
Wa-la-l-ʾākhiratu khayrun laka mina l-ʾūlā
And the Hereafter is better for you than the first life
وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَىٰ
Wa-la-sawfa yuʿṭīka rabbuka fa-tarḍā
And your Lord is going to give you, and you will be satisfied
أَلَمْ يَجِدْكَ يَتِيمًا فَآوَىٰ
ʾA-lam yajidka yatīman fa-ʾāwā
Did He not find you an orphan and give you refuge?
وَوَجَدَكَ ضَالًّا فَهَدَىٰ
Wa-wajadaka ḍāllan fa-hadā
And He found you lost and guided you
وَوَجَدَكَ عَائِلًا فَأَغْنَىٰ
Wa-wajadaka ʿāʾilan fa-ʾaghnā
And He found you poor and made you self-sufficient
فَأَمَّا الْيَتِيمَ فَلَا تَقْهَرْ
Fa-ʾammā l-yatīma fa-lā taqhar
So as for the orphan, do not oppress him
وَأَمَّا السَّائِلَ فَلَا تَنْهَرْ
Wa-ʾammā s-sāʾila fa-lā tanhar
And as for the petitioner, do not repel him
وَأَمَّا بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ فَحَدِّثْ
Wa-ʾammā bi-niʿmati rabbika fa-ḥaddith
But as for the favor of your Lord, report it

The Reliefالشَّرْح

Revealed in Makkah, companion to Surah Ad-Duha. The 'expansion of the breast' refers to spiritual light placed in the Prophet's heart to carry prophethood. Verses 5-6 — 'Indeed with hardship comes ease' — are repeated twice for emphasis, confirming Allah's promise. The repetition is a divine pledge, not mere comfort.

أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ
ʾA-lam nashraḥ laka ṣadrak
Did We not expand for you your breast?
وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ
Wa-waḍaʿnā ʿanka wizrak
And We removed from you your burden
الَّذِي أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ
Alladhī ʾanqaḍa ẓahrak
Which had weighed upon your back
وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ
Wa-rafaʿnā laka dhikrak
And raised high for you your repute
فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
Fa-ʾinna maʿa l-ʿusri yusrā
For indeed, with hardship will be ease
إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
ʾInna maʿa l-ʿusri yusrā
Indeed, with hardship will be ease
فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانصَبْ
Fa-ʾidhā faraghta fa-nṣab
So when you have finished your duties, then stand up for worship
وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَارْغَب
Wa-ʾilā rabbika fa-rghab
And to your Lord direct your longing

The Figالتِّين

Revealed in Makkah, this surah opens with oaths by three sacred sites: fig and olive (Palestine/prophets), Mount Sinai (Musa's revelation), and Makkah. The surah declares that Allah created humanity in the finest form, but without faith and good deeds, humans sink to the lowest. The juxtaposition of human potential and failure is a powerful motivation for righteous living.

وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ
Wa-t-tīni wa-z-zaytūn
By the fig and the olive
وَطُورِ سِينِينَ
Wa-ṭūri sīnīn
And by Mount Sinai
وَهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ الْأَمِينِ
Wa-hādhā l-baladi l-ʾamīn
And by this secure city — Makkah
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ
La-qad khalaqnā l-ʾinsāna fī ʾaḥsani taqwīm
We have certainly created man in the best of stature
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ
Thumma radadnāhu ʾasfala sāfilīn
Then We return him to the lowest of the low
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ
ʾIllā lladhīna ʾāmanū wa-ʿamilū ṣ-ṣāliḥāti fa-lahum ʾajrun ghayru mamnūn
Except those who believe and do righteous deeds — for them is a reward uninterrupted
فَمَا يُكَذِّبُكَ بَعْدُ بِالدِّينِ
Fa-mā yukadhdhibuka baʿdu bi-d-dīn
So what yet causes you to deny the Recompense?
أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَحْكَمِ الْحَاكِمِينَ
ʾA-laysa llāhu bi-ʾaḥkami l-ḥākimīn
Is not Allah the most just of judges?

The Clotالعَلَق

The first five verses constitute the very first Quranic revelation in 610 CE at the Cave of Hira, when the Prophet was 40 years old. Jibril commanded him to read — though he was unlettered. These verses establish the foundation of Islamic scholarship: knowledge comes through Allah's name, humans were created from humble origins, and Allah taught through the pen.

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ
ʾIqraʾ bi-smi rabbika lladhī khalaq
Recite in the name of your Lord who created
خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
Khalaqa l-ʾinsāna min ʿalaq
Created man from a clinging substance
اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ
ʾIqraʾ wa-rabbuka l-ʾakram
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous
الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ
Alladhī ʿallama bi-l-qalam
Who taught by the pen
عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
ʿAllama l-ʾinsāna mā lam yaʿlam
Taught man that which he knew not

The Night of Decreeالقَدْر

Revealed in Madinah, this surah describes Laylat al-Qadr — the Night of Power/Decree — in the last ten nights of Ramadan (most likely the 27th). On this night the Quran was first sent down to the lowest heaven. It is better than a thousand months of worship (over 83 years). Muslims worldwide intensify worship in the last ten nights to seek this blessed night.

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ
ʾInnā ʾanzalnāhu fī laylati l-qadr
Indeed, We sent the Quran down during the Night of Decree
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ
Wa-mā ʾadrāka mā laylatu l-qadr
And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
Laylatu l-qadri khayrun min ʾalfi shahr
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months
تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِم مِّن كُلِّ أَمْرٍ
Tanazzalu l-malāʾikatu wa-r-rūḥu fīhā bi-ʾidhni rabbihim min kulli ʾamr
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ
Salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭlaʿi l-fajr
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn
